Linguistics Lab Renovation

New conference center

While 2021 was a tumultuous year, the Linguistics Department of the University of Georgia is pleased to start off 2022 in a more positive light. The Linguistics Lab, located in 120A Gilbert Hall, has been fully renovated, and the new facilities are open for faculty and student use. These updates extend far beyond just a facelift of new paint, carpet and furniture. Extensive updates have been made in the medium recording booth, room 119, to improve soundproofing for high quality acoustic recording. This large, sound-proof space allows for multiple individuals to be recorded or interact for more complex experimental methods. In addition to the experimental needs, the instructional capability of the lab has also been enhanced through the interactive conference center pictured below. This display includes multi-angle webcams, microphones, and an interactive white board to allow for collaborative seminars or lectures whether in person or using Zoom. Four dedicated work benches along side the conference center will allow for hands on demos to suite a variety of lessons or activities. A complete gallery of the updated rooms can be found here

To equip these new spaces, the Linguistics Department has procured all new tech to aid the UGA community in its pursuit of linguistic research. Four new iMacs have been installed in the lab for experimental use and data processing. Three new PCs are also available one of which includes E-Prime software for stimulus presentation with a new Chronos multiXXX device. Dedicated USB Pre 2s are installed to allow for easy recording of participants and stimulus, and more equipment including microphones, preamps, recorders, and more can be signed out for use in or out of lab. A more detailed list of these equipment available can be seen on the Facilities page.

If you're interested in utilizing the space, please complete a reservation request, so we can discuss how we can facilitate your work. If you would like to know more about our equipment availability, please email linglab@uga.edu. More information about ongoing projects, the related faculty, contact, and other services provided by the lab can be found through the lab website. We're so exited to kick off 2022 with the new lab space, and we look forward to the new research opportunities it affords UGA.
